Triphala — A Rejuvenating Tonic that Spans the Ages

A perennially valuable and effective Indian Ayurvedic formula, one that is thousands of years old, triphala consists of the dried fruits of three ancient herbs: Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica, and Emblica officinalis. In the venerable system of Ayurveda, triphala is what’s called a rasayana, which describes the class of herbs that promote health and long life, strengthen tissues and immunity, promote intellect, and prevent disease.

In confirmation of the age-old wisdom, modern scientific research has verified triphala’s many benefits as a first-rate rejuvenating tonic, one of the most important of the rasayana remedies. Triphala is especially useful in the digestive role it plays, helping the body eliminate waste and rid itself of toxins.

Health Canada has granted its formal approval to St. Francis Herb Farm’s product, “Triphala” (NPN 80013274). While there is much research yet to be done on the therapeutic qualities of this outstanding formula, for the present Health Canada has officially endorsed the following use:

  • Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a tonic to the intestines to promote digestive power.
  • Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a rasayana - a tonic to the whole system - for rejuvenation, recuperation and vitality.
  • Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a tonic for the intestines, to promote digestive power and to treat habitual constipation, even as it detoxifies. Ayurvedic doctors also consider this a rasayana—that is to say, a tonic for the whole system, promoting rejuvenation, recuperation, and vitality.
