Goldenseal is considered the most effective botanical treatment for acute bacterial infection.

Long a mainstay for the treatment of infectious diarrhea, for example, goldenseal has been called the “king of the tonics of the mucous membranes.” Goldenseal balances the secretion of mucus, increasing and decreasing its flow as needed. It’s also been described as a mucous membrane alterative, because it promotes the flow of healthy mucus, which has infection-fighting properties. This makes goldenseal exceptionally useful for a broad range of inflammatory and infectious conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Other research indicates that goldenseal strengthens the immune system by fostering the production of disease-combating white blood cells.
